Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

MTD for Income Tax: set up and quarterly updates done for you

If you are a sole trader or landlord, we set up your digital records and send your quarterly updates to HMRC for you.

In short

Quarterly updates sent, nothing left to chance.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax changes how sole traders and landlords report to HMRC. Instead of one return a year, you keep digital records and send a short update every three months. The tax you pay does not change. The admin does. We set it up once, keep the records moving and send each update for you, so the new rules become a routine rather than a worry.

What is included

Are you in, and from when?
We add up your income from self-employment and property, the way HMRC does, and tell you the date you have to start. If you are exempt, we tell you that too.
Software that fits
We pick software that suits your records, connect your bank where that helps, and show you the few things you need to do each month.
Quarterly updates
We check your income and expenses each quarter and send the update before the deadline. You see the figures before anything goes to HMRC.
The end of the year
We make the year-end adjustments, claim your allowances and send your final declaration, which replaces the tax return you file now.

Who this is for

  • Sole traders whose turnover is over the joining limit
  • Landlords whose rent counts towards the limit
  • People with both a trade and rental income
  • Anyone who has had a letter from HMRC about Making Tax Digital

When it is due

Quarterly updates are due on 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May. The final declaration is due by 31 January after the tax year ends.

We confirm your dates in writing and keep track of them for you from then on.

What is MTD for Income Tax?

MTD for Income Tax (Making Tax Digital for Income Tax) is HMRC’s new way of reporting for sole traders and landlords. You keep your income and expense records in compatible software and send a short update to HMRC every quarter. After the year ends, you still file a final declaration by 31 January, just as you file a tax return now.

It does not change how much tax you pay. It changes how often you report, and it means paper records and a once-a-year scramble no longer work. Each quarterly update is a summary of income and expenses. It is not a full tax return, and you can correct figures in later updates or in the final declaration. The real benefit of having us do it is that your records stay up to date all year, so you can see your likely tax bill long before 31 January.

When do you have to join?

It depends on your qualifying income. That is your gross income from self-employment and property added together, before any expenses. HMRC looks at the tax return from two years earlier.

Partnerships join later, on a date not yet announced
You must join fromIf qualifying income is overBased on your return for
6 April 2026£50,0002024/25
6 April 2027£30,0002025/26
6 April 2028£20,0002026/27

Say you earn £18,000 from self-employment and £14,000 in rent. Your qualifying income is £32,000, so you join from April 2027 even though neither source is over £30,000 on its own. HMRC writes to people who must join. Some people are exempt, for example if they are digitally excluded. They carry on filing a normal Self Assessment return.

Who our MTD for Income Tax service is for

  • Sole traders with turnover over the joining limit for their year
  • Landlords whose gross rent alone, or added to a trade, takes them over the limit
  • People with both a business and rental property, who need separate records for each
  • Anyone already in who is finding the quarterly routine harder than expected

Even if you do not have to join until 2027 or 2028, it pays to get ready early. Moving from paper or a once-a-year spreadsheet to digital records takes a little time to settle. Starting a year ahead means the first real quarterly update is just a check, not a rush. If HMRC has written to you, send us the letter and we will confirm what it means for you.

What MTD help costs and what to send

Quarterly updates and the final declaration are covered by your fixed monthly fee, from £99 a month for self-employed people and landlords. Spreading the work across the year is what makes a fixed monthly fee fair. See our fees page.

  • Your last two Self Assessment returns, so we can check your qualifying income
  • Any letter you have had from HMRC about Making Tax Digital
  • Bank statements or software access for each business and each property
  • Receipts and invoices, as photos or on paper

Common questions

Do I pay tax every quarter under MTD for Income Tax?

No. Quarterly updates are reports, not payments. Payment dates stay the same: 31 January and 31 July for payments on account, and 31 January for the balance.

Can I still use a spreadsheet?

Yes, if you link it to HMRC with bridging software. The records must still be digital and the updates sent through compatible software.

Does employment income count towards the limit?

No. Only gross income from self-employment and property counts. Wages and pensions are left out of qualifying income.

I am in a partnership. Do I need to join?

Not yet for your partnership income. Partnerships join later, on a date HMRC has not yet announced. Any separate self-employment or rent you have may still bring you in.

What if I miss a quarterly update?

For 2026/27, HMRC is not applying penalty points for late updates. From the next year, each missed update is a point and 4 points means a £200 penalty.

How we run it

A routine, not a panic

We agree at the start what we need from you and when, and what you get back and when. After that it just happens, without anyone chasing anyone.

You get a written list of every date that applies to you, a reminder before each one, and the filing done early. If something changes in your business we change the plan, instead of finding out about it at the year end.

  • We check whether and when you have to join
  • Software chosen and set up around how you work
  • Your four quarterly updates sent to HMRC
  • Your final tax return filed as before
